Let’s put our GM hats on for a second.
Tarik Skubal is arguably the best pitcher in the game right now. He should be considered a cornerstone for any franchise that employs him. He is also theoretically
on the trade block since he is in the final year of arbitration and does not have an extension in hand. The Tigers are playing coy about whether or not they would even entertain offers for him, but we all know that there are back channel talks going on.
Let’s say the Phillies are one of those teams that have at least touched base with Detroit. Do the Phillies have enough to offer Detroit?
Let’s also say they need to give up at least two of their big four prospects. Does that begin with Andrew Painter and Aidan Miller? Would the Phillies be wise to include both of them, particularly for a pitcher that doesn’t look like he’ll sign an extension that doesn’t set the record for highest…..something? For a team that is looking to extend their window to compete for a title as long as possible, mortgaging some of their future for a one year player seems risky, but it is Tarik Skubal.
