With a couple of open spots on the practice squad, the Minnesota Vikings filled them on Wednesday with a pair of wide receivers, one of which you may have even heard of before.
Well, if you’re a Vikings fan, you’ve heard of both of them, but one of them. . .yeah, didn’t see this coming.
The Vikings have announced the signings of wide receivers Jeshaun Jones and Odell Beckham Jr. to the practice squad.
The Vikings brought Jones back after he served his three-game suspension for violating the league’s
substance abuse policy and waiving him earlier in the week, but you don’t care about that at the moment, do you?
Beckham Jr. really needs no introduction. He was drafted by the New York Giants out of Louisiana State in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, after which he won the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year Award and has twice been named a Second-Team NFL All-Pro (2015, 2016). In his career, he has 575 receptions for 7,987 receiving yards and 59 touchdowns.
His career has dropped off significantly since 2020, when he suffered a torn ACL midway through the season as a member of the Cleveland Browns. He returned to Cleveland for the 2021 season but had disagreements with the way he was being used in the Cleveland offense, leading to his release. He landed with the Los Angeles Rams and was a part of their Super Bowl championship team. He scored a touchdown in that Super Bowl, but he suffered another ACL injury during that game as well, one that caused him to miss the entire 2022 season.
In 2023, Beckham signed with the Baltimore Ravens and had 35 receptions for 565 yards and three scores. He was released by the Ravens ahead of free agency in 2024 and signed with Miami. He started the season on the Physically Unable to Perform List and wound up being released in December, appearing in nine games and making just nine catches. He did not play in 2025, and for part of the 2025 season served a six-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy.
Beckham attempted a comeback with the Giants this season and made the 53-man roster out of training camp, but was released after three games without recording a catch.
I’m not sure how high the expectations should be for OBJ at this point in his career or how much juice he has left in the proverbial tank. But he’s a member of the Vikings now, so what does everyone think about this development?
