Vincent Kompany has been a revelation since arriving at Bayern Munich. His story of going from coaching Burnley to dominating Europe with Bayern has caught the attention of the biggest clubs in the continent, most notably Manchester City. The Sky Blues boss, Pep Guardiola, has tipped the Belgian as his successor. However, here are three reasons why Vincent Kompany is believed to stay in Munich, according to supervisory board member and former CEO of Bayern, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

In an interview with
t-online, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge tackled the speculations of Vincent Kompany leaving Bayern Munich for Manchester City. This came after Pep Guardiola’s statement that he could see Vincent Kompany succeed him as the manager.
When asked whether such statements bothered him, KHR seemed as calm as ever. “Right now, I’m very relaxed about it. Vincent deliberately extended his contract with us until 2029. Of course, his success is now being noticed all over Europe. Almost a billion viewers watched our last game against Real Madrid. The way we play football, the many goals – it’s being seen everywhere,” answered KHR (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Kompany and Bayern are a match made for each other. The Belgian has always been very clear about his attacking philosophy. The Bavarians have long maintained a similar philosophy thriving on fast direct attacks. Together this combination has demolished record after record for goals scored in Germany and Europe. Playing some of the most enjoyable brand of the game and outscoring nearly every opponent they come across, both parties align very well for a long term partnership.
The Kompany family is loving Munich
The family life is of high importance for talents to feel settled and so, it must come as no surprise the importance of how the Kompanys feel in Munich. Rummenigge has some crucial insider information that Bayern are in a good position on the family front.
“But I believe he’ll be here for a long time to come because he’s happy here. He lives in Grünwald, just four houses away from me. I get the impression the family feels at home. The children, too. I know that from my grandchildren, who go to the same school as two of his kids,” revealed Rummenigge.
Boardroom backing
The drama of certain elite clubs in this particular area is too well known. With more coaches being sacked than ever to keep big player egos satisfied, the approach at Bayern comes across as a refreshing change. The scenario of a player being bigger than the club is likely to never occur and therefore discipline is rarely an issue. Having such a strong philosophical and structural base to work on significantly impacts both on and off pitch outcomes.
“Right now, we have ideal conditions here at FC Bayern. I’ve always said that the most important employee at Bayern Munich is the coach,” said Rummenigge highlighting the weight of the Bayern manager’s office.

Bayern Munich are one of the biggest teams in football. The board has done well in the past to preserve their image as a destination club rather than a selling club regardless of market pressure from state and oil backed organizations. Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano are the latest examples of retaining players in high demand. However, in Kompany’s case, things are a little more complicated.
Why Manchester City works?
Manchester City can offer total backing as well as unlimited funds to finance Kompany’s project. Having played at City for more than a decade and led that side to numerous titles as the captain, the Sky Blues will always hold a special place in his heart. While the city of Munich is absolutely lovely, settling back in Manchester would perhaps not be a major problem.
So, it will not be a simple decision for sure. The question of the move to City in this case seems more of a when rather than an if. The Belgian just turned 40 and that allows him to postpone the City job for a later time. How Bayern can convince him to stay for as long as possible becomes the most important aspect of this potential transfer.
Why Manchester City does not work?
Having said all that, three aspects that stand out in favor of the Bavarians are the incredible and innumerable fans. Secondly, establishing a legacy at a historical club such as Bayern will always have its own charm.
Thirdly and most importantly, Manchester City is under severe scrutiny for various financial breaches. More than 115 charges from the Premier League alone for fudging accounts, non cooperation with investigators and circumventing financial regulations etc. The potential consequences from sanctions could range from fines, point deductions, titles being stripped, all the way to outright expulsion from the Premier League.
With such a huge sword hanging over City’s neck, any manager would be precarious before taking up Guardiola’s position, least of all someone like Kompany who has everything at one of the best teams in the world.
