We’ve made it to the last regular season Saturday in College Basketball.
One final Saturday. Senior days abound.
Missouri gets the Arkansas Razorbacks, which according to reports, will be short handed. Likely All American point guard Darius Acuff has been nursing a bit of an ankle injury, and Arkansas does not need to win this basketball game. Arkansas is 12-5 in the conference, and have locked up a double bye in the SEC Tournament, along with Florida and Alabama. The final double bye will be decided
by the events of the day today.
For Tennessee, it’s easy… win and you’re the last double bye. Lose and then things get complicated. It’s already complicated for the Vols because freshmen super star Nate Ament has a high ankle sprain and is a game time decision to play tomorrow. The Vols take on Vandy, who are 10-7 and have an outside shot at the double bye as well.
Perhaps viewing the current standings might help, Here are the standings going into the day:
- Florida 15-2 (locked in) – vs Auburn
- Alabama 12-5 – vs Auburn
- Arkansas 12-5 – at Missouri
- Tennessee 11-6 – vs Vanderbilt
- Missouri 10-7 – vs Arkansas
- Vanderbilt 10-7 – at Tennessee
- Kentucky 10-7 – vs Florida
- Texas A&M 10-7 – at LSU
- Georgia 9-8 – at Miss State
- Texas 9-8 – vs Oklahoma
- Auburn 7-10 – at Alabama
- Oklahoma 6-11 – at Texas
- Mississippi State 5-12 – vs Georgia
- Ole Miss 4-13 vs South Carolina
- LSU 3-15 – vs Texas A&M
- South Carolina 3-15 – at Ole Miss
Obviously the best record gets the higher seed. So every seed after the 1st is up for grabs. If Alabama beat Auburn, they’re the 2 seed. If Arkansas beats Missouri, and Alabama loses, the Hogs are the 2 seed. If both Alabama and Arkansas lose and Tennessee wins, the three way tie goes to Arkansas.
However if Mizzou wins they’re at worst a 5 seed. That’s because the Tigers hold tie breakers over everyone who can win tomorrow and get to 11 wins (Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Texas A&M). If Vanderbilt wins and Missouri wins as well, the Tigers get the 4 seed! Because they then hold the tiebreaker over Tennessee.
So the injuries to Ament and Acuff could come really into impact the seeding in a major way. Losing Ament weakens the Vols, and losing Acuff weakens the Hogs.
Now the downside here, if Missouri loses, and Georgia, Texas, Texas A&M, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt all win… that would drop the Tigers from a potential double by all the way to 10th. That’s the fun of being in a quality league, there are really good teams, in fact there are 11 teams with a shot still at the NCAA Tournament. 11 if you listen to SEC broadcasts (Oklahoma doesn’t have a shot, don’t listen to them). The top of the league is clear, it’s Florida, Arkansas, and Alabama. Then there’s a muddied water from 4 through 10 where things can get all kinds of interesting.
If you want to play around with the seeding, you can use this fun seeding tool to go through all the scenarios. My advice to Mizzou, your game is first… win the game. Worry about the rest later. You can’t control what others do, but you can control your own energy, and your play. So win.
After today, what follows is the greatest two week period in all of College Hoops. Championship Week followed by the first week of the NCAA Tournament. Let’s win today, and try and enjoy the rest.
