After hopping from one NFC West team to another, veteran wide receiver Demarcus Robinson will not be able to play the early portion of the San Francisco 49ers schedule.
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Robinson, who pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor DUI charge and was sentenced to probation
, has been suspended by the NFL for three games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. A suspension was all but inevitable, but now it’s a done deal. This news obviously means that Robinson will
miss opening day against the Seattle Seahawks, which is extremely relevant given what happened last year with the Rams. In the first meeting at Lumen Field, Robinson recorded a season-high six catches for 94 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime over Riq Woolen to (little did we know) effectively decide the NFC West. He caught three passes for 72 yards in the regular season finale in Inglewood, which means his two highest receiving yards games of 2024 were against Seattle, and indeed they’re two of his best ever performances.
The 49ers wide receiver room is a bit questionable, to put it mildly. While second-year player Ricky Pearsall has had a good camp, Robinson is suspended, Brandon Aiyuk will not be ready for Week 1 after tearing his ACL and MCL last October, Jauan Jennings has been out with a “calf injury” that may be legitimate but comes with the context of wanting a new contract, and Jacob Cowing and Patrick Watkins are both dealing with injuries.
Fear not, if you’re the 49ers. You’ve just got yourselves Skyy Moore from the Kansas City Chiefs, less than a week after his punt return touchdown against the Seahawks.
