Uli Hoeneß has offered an interesting insight into when he and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge could eventually step away from Bayern Munich completely.
The 74-year-old Hoeneß made it clear that there is no fixed timetable for his departure from the club’s supervisory board. As long as he and Rummenigge remain healthy, he can easily see himself continuing in the role for another three or four years.
“The supervisory board – as long as we’re healthy – certainly won’t stay until we’re 80 or 85, even though Edmund
Stoiber did indeed stay until he was 80. But I can easily imagine doing it for the next three or four years. I don’t have any fixed timetable at all. What matters is the feeling. And you’ll be surprised at what happens in the coming months – especially on the supervisory board. We’re in the process of changing a few things, and it’s clearly going in the right direction. Once everything is in place and younger people, say around 40, take the reins, then hopefully we’ll be able to sit back and enjoy the show,” Hoeneß told DAZN (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Hoeneß also stressed that he and Rummenigge are not involved in Bayern Munich’s day-to-day operations. Their role is on the supervisory board, but that does not mean they are completely detached from the club’s bigger picture.
And when it comes to Rummenigge, Hoeneß was particularly clear that Bayern Munich still needs his experience.
“We don’t interfere in day-to-day operations at all. We’re on the supervisory board. But if someone came to the club tomorrow and said, ‘It’s about time,’ — I’d be the first to say, ‘That’s it.’ — I just don’t think the club can afford to do without someone like Karl-Heinz right now,” Hoeneß stated.
The message seems clear, Hoeneß and Rummenigge are not planning to remain at Bayern Munich forever, but there is also no immediate rush to leave.
The club is already preparing for the future, with younger people expected to take on more responsibility over time. But until that transition is complete, Bayern Munich still values the experience, knowledge and influence of two men who have shaped the club for decades.
And Hoeneß, at least for now, appears happy to remain involved and see what the next few years bring.
