BYU came into the game as a 50-point favorite and topped that in a 63-7 win over Utah Tech in the season opener Saturday night in Provo.
BYU did everything they were supposed to, resting the starters in the second half after going into halftime up 42-0. BYU outgained Utah Tech 521-184 yards and won the turnover battle 4-0. In one half, Bear Bachmeier threw for 198 yards, 3 TDs, and ran for 30 yards and 1 touchdown.
The star of the night, however, was freshman receiver Legend Glasker. Glasker was one
of the stars of fall camp, and proved why he could be one of BYU’s top playmakers this season. Legend scored BYU’s first TD on a 9-yard jet sweep, and led BYU in receiving with 3 receptions for 65 yards and 2 touchdowns. Legend only touched the ball four times, but scored on three of the touches and showed his speed in the open field and ability to separate.
Seven BYU players ran for over 20 yards, led by 59 yards for freshman Devaughn Eka. LJ Martin carried the ball 7 times for 54 yards.
One downside for BYU was a knee injury for starting safety Raider Damuni. Raider left the game unable to put any weight on the knee, and the initial prospects look grim. We’ll wait for the final verdict from Kalani Sitake in future press conferences.
BYU takes a big step up next week in the Big 12 opener when they host Arizona in Provo. The game kicks off at 1:30 MT on FOX. BYU is currently a 7-point favorite.
