One of the popular phrases in the world of football and sports is continuity.
No matter the level of play, this is the rare gem every unit and team craves to unearth. In professional sports, that’s made even more difficult with free agency. It’s difficult to keep players, and thus even tougher to maintain continuity.
The Denver Broncos are one of the rare exceptions, and that speaks to the culture that head coach Sean Payton has developed in his three years in Denver. It doesn’t hurt to have one of the best
ownership groups in the NFL and a general manager in George Paton, who has a great rapport with Payton and the franchise.
Just look at the lack of turnover from the team that was just in the AFC Championship Game. The Broncos lost one starter on defense, kept the offense intact, and added Jaylen Waddle in the process.
But the unit that highlights continuity is Denver’s offensive line.
As offensive coordinator Davis Webb said to the media earlier this week:
“I’ve never been around somewhere that’s been about to be four straight years of basically the same offensive line. It’s such a blessing because they’re good dudes, they’re coached well, they’re nasty, they take things personal. I think pass block-wise, they’ve been pretty consistent over the last few years, and run-game-wise, I think we’re trying to build on that consistency.
“Not saying it’s been bad, but we can definitely be more consistent. That’s a goal that we’ve tried to address this offseason. We’re just very blessed in all of our rooms that the offensive line’s been the most stationary. They’re the strength of our offense.”
As the Broncos look to take the next step this season, continuity along the offensive line and within the team will play a massive role in making that happen.
