The Harry Kane-to-FC Barcelona rumors are still lingering in the background as it look likes the Englishman is set for a longer spell with Bayern Munich.
Still, some whispers are still out there and former Spain international Gaizka Mendieta believes there could be a realistic path for the move to happen someday.
Mendieta, who spent the 2002/03 season on loan at Barcelona, believes FC Barcelona would seriously consider making a move if the opportunity presented itself. But ultimately, he thinks the decision
could come down to Kane and what he wants from the next chapter of his career.
“I still think if the opportunity was there for Barça to get Harry Kane, they’ll go for it. It’s a matter of what Harry Kane wants to do. I think with the Champions League, winning the league, and winning trophies, he’s obviously enjoyed an amazing season for Bayern Munich. For them, the Champions League is the next thing. Whether they can do it or not, let’s see this season. But if it doesn’t happen, another season winning only the Bundesliga might put him on the market,” Mendieta told Casinolyze. “It’s a similar situation to Robert Lewandowski, he was there for a long time, needed new challenges, and went to Barça. So I’m sure if that happens next season or in two seasons, I would not be surprised if Barça is keeping an eye on his contract situation.”
That comparison to Lewandowski is certainly interesting from a Bayern Munich perspective. Kane has already achieved something he waited his entire career for by winning the Bundesliga, but the Champions League remains the biggest prize still missing from his Bayern Munich résumé.
If Bayern Munich can finally conquer Europe with Kane leading the line, it could make the idea of another challenge less relevant.
Maybe.
But if the Champions League continues to elude him? Barcelona will probably still be watching.
Either way, Kane appears to be happy and content in Bavaria. Per reports, the biggest debate between Kane’s camp and Bayern Munich is about an extra year in his proposed contract extension. If Kane gets that third year to his extension, a future move to Barca might be completely off the table.
