Football season is officially underway, but news broke after the game of Ben’s passing.
Here is the link from KOMU’s announcement. Chances are if you’re reading this you know who Ben Arnet is. He was a mainstay working for the athletic department for years, then he took the job as the Sports Director at KOMU, where he’s helped influence countless numbers of student journalists.
I didn’t know Ben personally, but he was so prominent in the media community you feel like you know him. He did a lot of the early season non-conference games with Jarrett Sutton (among many others) and I do consider
Jarrett a friend at this point. So watching those two felt like watching your buddies call a Mizzou game.
There’s been an plethora of comments, mostly sadness and shock, from those who knew Ben, across different social media platforms. If you’re on Twitter I encourage you to check them out. It’s been a true outpouring of love.
There’s been no announcement for cause of death. The why doesn’t matter right now, all that matters is his friends and family find some level of comfort in how he was able to be an inspiration to so many. He’s gone far too soon.
I wanted to start with Ben, because it’s obviously huge impactful news. We keep things light around here for the most part… but this is truly awful.
Now onto the sports stuff.
Yesterday at Rock M and Rock M+
It was a busy day yesterday for some reason. Let’s recap everything:
- Get in on the SURVIVOR POOL If you haven’t already, Mac does the work all you gotta do is pick!
- We got our Betting Overlords taken care of early, first with Rock eM Pick eM.
- Nathan stayed on the betting side with a look at the Best Bets:
I think Kentucky is low-key going to suck out loud this season. They just announced that Aggie reject Zach Calzada will start for them at quarterback, which is underwhelming enough, but the Wildcats lost a ton of players off a bad team last year.
This is a game to watch, will UK be that bad to warrant picking the Rockets straight up? I don’t know.
- We got the results of the Reacts Poll from Sammy, and Mizzou fans were confident in the QBs.
- Click for Last Night’s Live Thread.
- Check out the Game Story from Rory Whetstone:
Ultimately, the decision was made for him. In his first appearance of the night, Sam Horn stepped on the field for a QB rush. At the conclusion of the play, Horn was down in obvious pain and later had to be helped off the field with the assistance of the training staff. Before the end of the half, he was spotted donning crutches and a large cast on his right leg.
- Josh’s takeaways, it was a 61-6 blowout but we can still talk bout it:
We should start with the positive, and it was just about all positive for Beau Pribula against the Bears. The once Nittany Lion looked like he’s been a Tiger for the better part of his career, running Mizzou’s offense with a little bit of flair and a whole lot of confidence. By the end of the first half, he was responsible for three touchdowns, 255 total yards, zero turnovers, several explosive plays and pristine ball placement all over the field. Not that he needed anything else to prove himself on the night, but his second half snaps brought him to a final line of four total touchdowns – two by air, two by ground – and 348 total yards from scrimmage.
- And don’t miss out on your Non-Football news, new RM scribe Sophie Silvers previewed the XC season:
With the NCAA Cross Country Championships at large, Levermore is focused on earning key “at-large points” during the regular season. Per MUTigers.com, the men’s cross country team have been picked to finish fourth in the Southeastern Conference heading into the 2025 season while the women’s team have been selected seventh.
- Mizzou Soccer lost last night 2-1 to Memphis, Colin had the coverage.
Check out Sophie’s preview, we’re excited for what she brings to the team.
Some really interesting stuff over on RM+.
- We’re talkin’ the game, mostly. True is still tracking movements of Mizzou players in the NFL. And ICYMI, Matt Harris finished his swing series on the Mizzou Hoops transfer portal additions with a look at Sebastian Mack:
Bringing up Mack’s shooting is ground we covered — albeit quickly — when the soon-to-be junior committed to Missourion April 7. And in the last four months, the contours of that terrain haven’t changed all that much. The question isn’t whether Mack’s move to Columbia heralds a drastic overhaul of his game. Coach Dennis Gates and his staff sought another player who would not back down from attacking the paint and applying rim pressure.
Matt’s done a great job with these.
