It was back in 2021 when Sasha Banks vs. Bianca Belair was featured in the main event of WrestleMania 37 night one. That was only the second women’s main event in WrestleMania history.
At the time, I remember being skeptical that Vince McMahon would book Banks vs. Belair in the WrestleMania main event, because they were doing a mid card angle with Reginald the Sommelier on SmackDown that didn’t even headline the weekly TV show. I figured their best chance to headline WrestleMania would be if McMahon added
a third person to make it a triple threat match. I was wrong, and they got the main event spot over Bobby Lashley vs. Drew McIntyre.
Reginald the Sommelier (aka Reggie, aka Scrypts) now adds a wild twist to that story. In an interview on Rewind Recap Relive, Reggie claims that Vince McMahon actually pitched an idea for him to main event WrestleMania 37 in an intergender triple threat match against Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair.
First, Reggie explains that Vince loved his character and acrobatics.
“Vince was really big on me. I was a Vince guy…everything came from Vince. Vince loved me.”
Reggie then reveals an example of how much Vince loved him, which sounds batshit insane.
“Just one that’s ridiculous off the bat, I almost main evented WrestleMania. It was an intergender match…Vince wanted a triple threat between Sasha, Bianca, and myself.”
McMahon wanted an angle where Sasha fell in love with Reggie. As Vince explained his WrestleMania idea to everyone, Banks and Belair were clearly not happy about it.
“Vince calls all of us into the office. Me, Sasha and Bianca, and we have some producers and writers there. He says, ‘This is what I’m thinking. Reggie, you buy [Sasha] a dog. She loves you, and you’re playing every week in the middle. But the thing is, you have an endgame. You will come out and announce that this is no longer a singles [match]. This is a triple threat.’
When he said that, Sasha had a look on her face, and Bianca had the same look on her face. And I’m just like, I don’t know what the hell is happening right now. I’m not gonna look at anyone, I’m not gonna say anything.”
Sasha fought against it, and thankfully Vince’s terrible idea was nixed.
“Vince said, ‘Because Sasha and Reginald, you guys have great chemistry.’ And Sasha kept asking Vince, ‘What do you mean? What is this chemistry?’ He’s like, ‘I don’t know. It’s just chemistry!’ She’s like, ‘But what makes us have this chemistry?’ He was like, ‘I don’t know, damn it! It’s chemistry!’ We just didn’t get an answer. It was just chemistry.
But lo and behold, they came to their senses. They would have been stupid to throw me in that match. And so they went on to have a great match that is gonna live in WWE history for a long time. Can you imagine?”
Ah yes, chemistry. One of those desperate terms that some people like to throw around to justify something when they can’t come up with a good answer.
Can you imagine if there was no push back to McMahon’s out of touch creative vision and this bullshit actually happened at WrestleMania 37? Let me know your reaction to Reggie’s story in the comments below, Cagesiders.
