A little over a month ago – on October 11, to be precise, so not even a couple of weeks after the end of the season – we asked if you could name all 65 players who appeared for the 2025 iteration of the Arizona
Diamondbacks. Since then, 109 people have tried… And 106 of you fell short. I am very impressed by the three people who managed to name everyone: especially if they did it without a Baseball Reference tab open in their browser next to the challenge. Heck, even if they had, I am still somewhat impressed by the sheer bloody-mindedness to type in all 65 names. And apparent ability to spell “Feyereisen” [paging ish85!].
The average score was 64%, which is about 42 of the 65 players, and slightly down on last year’s 66%. There were a few entrants who basically seem to have given up. The two people who were only able to name 1-3 players would seem likely to have received an important phone-call, realized they had left something in the oven, or simply got bored and drifted off. But the bulk of people did get more than half of the team: the median score range was the 40-44 block, and this was also the most popular outcome, being achieved by 21% of those who took the test. If you forgot five or less, that would put you in the top ten percent. Well done. You need to get out more.
As for who you remembered and/or forgot? Probably no great surprises at the top. There was just one person who seemed to forget that Corbin Carroll played for the Diamondbacks this year, though I would be fascinated to discover what mindset resulted in that decision. Maybe it was Thomas Harding who took the quiz? Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo – our trio of Silver Sluggers and MVP vote-getters were almost as well remembered. Josh Naylor managed to pip Eugenio Suarez, but most of the regulars were over 90%. New entrants there were Blaze Alexander (up from 73.1% at the end of 2024), Pavin Smith (84.9%) and Brandon Pfaadt (83.2%).
I was initially surprised to see Casey Kelly ranking almost as high, at 85.3% – not bad recognition for a guy who recorded precisely five outs all season. But then I realized he was basically a freebie: most people would have put “Kelly” in due to Merrill, and got Casey as a bonus! A little surprised Shelby Miller only came in at 68.6%, considering he got more saves than anyone else. Perhaps some people were too traumatized by his previous time here, and consequently have erased him from their memory as a protective measure. Still a higher number than remembered Randal Grichuk though (66.1%).
Finally, let’s go down to the bottom and a veritable “Who’s he?” of baseball players. The lowest among the non-minimum was Kendall Graveman (28.4%), who clearly won’t go down as one of Mike Hazen’s more memorable bullpen acquisitions. He tied with Scott McGough, which is all you need to know. Tied for third lowest on 22% were two other relief arms, Tayler Scott and Trevor Richards. Mr Feyereisen was below twenty percent (19.3%), though the spelling thing might have worked against him, to be fair. But dead last, and the least-remembered Diamondback of 2025 was Jeff Brigham, on just 15.6%. Gone – and yes, almost entirely forgotten…
