Green Bay Packers quarterback Malik Willis has played great over the last two games, completing 27 of 32 passes for 409 yards and two touchdowns for a passer rating of 139.6, despite the team losing back-to-back
games. This has led to some fans wondering what it would take for Willis to actually displace starting quarterback Jordan Love, who is currently dealing with a concussion.
On Monday, head coach Matt LaFleur shut down those questions as soon as he was asked about them.
Here’s what he said:
“Guys, I want to pump the brakes on all that stuff. I think Jordan Love is playing some pretty high-level football, and it’s great that we feel the same about Malik in his ability to go in there.”
…
“It’s pretty clear that Jordan is our franchise quarterback, and when he’s healthy, he is going to be our starter. So, I just want to squash all that.”
So that’s that. Don’t expect to see Willis under center in the wild-card round, or maybe ever again in a Packers uniform. Willis is in a contract year, and he will probably end up signing with another club in free agency.
Because of the volume of injuries that the team is facing, LaFleur wouldn’t commit to sitting starters against the Minnesota Vikings in the season finale. So maybe it will be Love under center this week.
