Germany’s goalkeeper situation ahead of the 2026 World Cup in North America has become untenable. Despite Oliver Baumann being the clear #1 at this moment, head coach Julian Nagelsmann still needs another goalkeeper to bring due to longstanding #2 Marc-André ter Stegen’s season-ending injury a few months ago. Enter Jonas Urbig from Bayern Munich.
German news outlet Bild (as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia) reported that there are considerations at the DFB to take Urbig to the World Cup as third
or fourth choice goalkeeper (presumably behind Baumann, Noah Atobulu, and one of Alexander Nübel or Finn Dahmen). The plan is to prepare him as Germany’s potential future #1 and give him big tournament experience for the time after the World Cup.
A return for former captain Manuel Neuer seems to be out of the question, especially with his recurring injuries at club level and a previous statement re-affirming his retirement from the national team.
