There is genuine talent emerging out of Bayern Munich’s youth system at a rate not seen in over a decade. Lennart Karl is the obvious success story but the likes of Wisdom Mike, Cassiano Kiala, David Santos Daiber and Felipe Chávez have also made their competitive debuts this season.
One who had that same progress cruelly ripped away from him is Javier Fernández. After being included in the senior team’s 2024 preseason and making steps towards the first team, he has spent nearly the entire last 18
months on the treatment table, battling one injury after another and losing his progress. At 18, however, the Spaniard has plenty of time to regain his fitness and get his momentum back. There have been numerous rumors that he is looking to do so with a loan during the January transfer window and sporting director Christoph Freund welcomed the possibility.
Now there seem to be some concrete rumors on a potential destination. Florian Plettenberg reports, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, that 1. FC Nürnberg are the current front runners for the deal:
Nürnberg are exploring a deal to sign Javi Fernández this month. Talks are underway. Grasshopper Club Zürich and two other clubs are also interested. The Spaniard would be allowed to leave on loan to gain regular first-team experience at a high level.
This would be the second Bayern loanee in the Nürnberg squad after the perennially unlucky Tarek Buchmann, who is hardly blossoming in his loan spell due to consistent injuries. This would have been unthinkable a decade ago due to the bitter rivalry between the two Bavarian clubs, but said rivalry has simmered of late due to the clubs playing in different divisions of German football.
Nor would Buchmann and Fernández be the only ones with a Bayern history in the squad. Miroslav Klose, who played and coached in Munich, is the current head coach for a team in the middle of the 2. Bundesliga table. Could he be the right man to bring the best out of Fernández following these injury set backs?
