Club legend and supervisory board member Uli Hoeneß has given board member for sport Max Eberl a lot of credit for one of Bayern Munich’s most important recent signings — Michael Olise.
According to Hoeneß, Eberl essentially took the initiative to bring Olise to Bayern Munich, despite the club not having an extensive history with the player or even knowing him particularly well beforehand.
“Max Eberl gets the credit for the signing of Michael Olise, that has to be said. He essentially made this decision
on his own initiative, because we didn’t know the player beforehand. We said we couldn’t really comment on it. But if you’re so convinced – and Christoph Freund was also involved, as was the coach, although Vincent wasn’t there at the time, to my knowledge – then we have to accept it. That’s precisely what management is for: so they can and are allowed to make decisions,” Hoeneß said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
That is a fascinating insight into how the transfer came together.
Eberl saw something in Olise and was convinced enough to push for the signing, even without everyone at the club having the same level of familiarity with the player. Christoph Freund was also involved, while Vincent Kompany was part of the process as well, although Hoeneß believes the current Bayern Munich coach was not yet in place when the initial decision was made.
Sometimes, transfers are built around months of scouting and complete consensus. Other times, someone in a position of responsibility sees the opportunity, believes in the player and makes the call.
That is exactly what Hoeneß believes management should be allowed to do.
And in Olise’s case, Eberl’s conviction has certainly been justified. The Frenchman has quickly established himself as one of Bayern Munich’s most important players, proving that Eberl’s decision to trust his instincts was a very good one.
