Bayern Munich’s Serge Gnabry has not had an easy time of things of late. He came under a lot of criticism for poor performances for both Bayern and his national team Germany, missed the once in a lifetime Germany 2024 European Championship through injury and was rumored to be a candidate of sale in the 2025 summer transfer window.
But the 30-year-old enjoyed a real resurgence in the 2025/26 season in a more central position under Vincent Kompany, becoming much more important to the team in Jamal Musiala’s
absence, accumulating over 20 goals and assists in all competitions, regaining an important role for Germany ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and finally winning a contract extension that will keep him in Munich until 2028.
Then things took a turn for the worse again. Serge Gnabry recently suffered a season ending injury, apparently while taking penalties, that will keep him out for months. Given that he would likely take months to recover from the injury and the start of the World Cup was less than 2 months away, everybody already had a bad feeling about his participation in football’s biggest tournament.
But it is only now that Serge Gnabry confirmed via Instagram that he will miss the 2026 World Cup:
The last few days have been tough to process. A Bayern season which still holds much to play for after securing another Bundesliga title on the weekend.
As for the World Cup dream with the DFB team.. That’s sadly over for me. Like the rest of the country I’ll be supporting the boys from home.
Now it’s time to focus on recovery and getting back for pre-season. Thank you for all the messages.
What a terrible blow this is for Gnabry as he will now be forced to miss two international tournaments in a row through injury.
