Ring of Honor is less than one week away from Supercard of Honor on May 15 in Salisbury, Maryland. Questions were rising in the TV title divisions about opponents for the PPV.
One question was answered. Red Velvet has been a fighting champion since winning the women’s television title back from Mercedes Moné. Even though Velvet kept active, no obvious challengers stood out for the upcoming PPV. ROH announced that Viva Van is stepping up to the plate.
Van recently picked up her first singles win in ROH after losing fifteen in a row. That one win was over Sara Leon, and it looks like the momentum parlayed into a TV title shot. Ignore the ridiculously bad record. The match should be strong. Van can cook in the ring and has collected several championships on the indies.
Despite injury time away, Nick Wayne has built a nice résumé as men’s TV champion with wins over Jay Lethal, Rhino, Titan, Willie Mack, and Komander to name a few. Wayne won’t be available for Supercard of Honor, because he has grander plans in store. Wayne will travel to Japan to compete in the NJPW Best Of The Super Juniors tournament.
Wayne isn’t getting a free pass in ROH though. He will defend the TV title against AR Fox in the taped episode of ROH TV airing on May 14, the night before Supercard of Honor. We’ll see if this result has any ramifications for the PPV.
The updated lineup for ROH Supercard of Honor includes:
- ROH Women’s World Championship: Athena (c) vs. Billie Starkz vs. Maya World vs. Trish Adora vs. Yuka Sakazaki vs. TBD in Survival of the Fittest
- ROH World Championship: Bandido (c) vs. Blake Christian
- ROH Women’s Pure Championship: Deonna Purrazzo (c) vs. Diamante
- ROH Women’s World Television Championship: Red Velvet (c) vs. Viva Van
- Nigel McGuinness vs. Josh Woods in Pure rules
Persephone was pulled from Survival of the Fittest due to injury. The storyline reason is black mist from Julia Hart. In place of the CMLL women’s world champion, ROH pivoted to a qualifier between Zayda Steel and Hyan. The winner advances to Supercard of Honor. That qualifier match takes place on the May 14 episode of ROH TV.
Zayda is confident that she is the real deal.
Hyan plans to get past Steel and face her partner Maya World as the final two in Survival of the Fittest.
As for other champions, Lee Moriarty will be eyeing the winner between Nigel McGuinness and Josh Woods, but the Pure champ has no competition at the moment for Supercard of Honor. Sammy Guevara and Beast Mortos don’t have any obvious challengers yet for the ROH tag titles. Eddie Kingston might be back in championship contention. The former world champ teamed with Ortiz to defeat the Infantry. Shane Taylor and the Infantry laid a beatdown on them after the match, then Mance Warner ran in for the save. Three plus three could equal the ROH six-man tag title match for the PPV.
