This has been one of the hottest topics amongst Cleveland fans over the past month or so, and it honestly shouldn’t be, for multiple reasons.
First off, it’s very well known that Todd Monken likes Shedeur Sanders quite a bit and was pushing for Baltimore to draft him last year when he was still the offensive coordinator there. Sanders losing the job to Deshaun Watson really wouldn’t mean much in 2026, as it’s more than likely Watson’s final year in Cleveland regardless of his performance this season.
Also, just because the Browns are planning on taking a quarterback early in the 2027 NFL Draft doesn’t necessarily give Andrew Berry and Co. the “freedom” to move on from Sanders right now either.
It’s pretty realistic to think that even if Watson does end up heading into the 2026 season as the starter, he won’t be able to hold onto the job for long. Whether that’s simply because of his consistent injury troubles, or that he’ll return to form as an underwhelming player who’s just a shell of his former self when it comes to his ability on the field.
As of right now, Shedeur Sanders is pretty much guaranteed to play a good portion of the season in 2026, regardless of whether or not he begins as the starter.
Therefore, there’s really no reason whatsoever to trade him, as he’d most likely be a top-notch backup to whoever Cleveland does end up drafting in 2027 as well. Why trade him for peanuts when he still has potential to make an impact for the team at some point?
