Borussia Dortmund have announced that head coach Niko Kovač has extended his contract for an additional year, until 2027. Kovač initially joined BVB on an 18-month contract in January 2025, replacing Nuri Şahin, with the goal to turn Dortmund’s torrid season around. He did exactly that, taking the team from 11th place to sneaking in to the top four on the final day of the Bundesliga season, securing qualification for this season’s Champions League.
Borussia Dortmund’s Managing Director of Sport claims
that Kovač has “dedicated himself to his task at BVB with skin and hair”, which I can only assume is a good thing, though I personally do not want anyone showing their dedication to anything with their skin. Kovač, however, made the following statement, which I am sure we can all agree held up to translation much better:
We have achieved a lot together in the past six months and brought Borussia back on track in sports. As a coaching team, we felt great confidence and the feeling that we could make a difference here together with the club and the fans.
Kovač completely eclipsed expectations. He turned the worst BVB side in recent memory into a fierce outfit that, by the end of the season, was giving Bayern Munich a run for their money on form and underlying performance metrics. He has more than earned his extension, but now he must deliver. He has had a full preseason to work with this Dortmund squad, and expectations will be high.
Let’s hope there is lots of skin and hair in our future.
