Joe Gomez was unexpectedly taken off in Liverpool’s loss to PSG mid-week, and head coach Arne Slot has confirmed that the defender will not be available to face Everton on Sunday in the first Merseyside Derby at the Hill-Dickinson Stadium.
Gomez, who came on at the beginning of the second half on Wednesday, was taken off on the 67th minute. Details of his injury remain unknown, with “discomfort” stated as the reasoning.
At the pre-Everton press conference, Arne Slot did note that Jayden Danns is making
progress on his own return from injury, as the young striker was taken off injured for the U21s last month against Manchester City. He has had an injury-studded period of late, which Slot has referred to as “unlucky” despite the player’s clear hard work. Though he is back training with the U21s he is nowhere near match fit, so we should not expect to see him as a depth option any time soon.
No further updates were given for long-term absentees, though the recent return of Alexander Isak amidst all the bad news is perhaps a small bright spot. Liverpool have just the top five to play for in this final phase of the season, with additional priority in making sure what’s happened this season does not happen again in the next one.
