If I may speak for all of Illini Nation, we’re still on Cloud 9 after Saturday’s Elite 8 win against Iowa. It’s all we have been thinking about, making it hard to get any type of productive work done.
Brad Underwood said it best in an interview with Jon Rothstein: “I went to bed, and I couldn’t sleep. It’s better than the dreams.”
Same, Coach. If you’re like most Illinois fans, and I would assume Brad Underwood as well, your Saturday night probably looked the same: lying in bed after a long night of
celebration, endlessly scrolling through highlights, and smiling ear to ear while doing so.
Illinois punching their ticket to the Final Four is something we’ve been waiting on for a long time. It’s been 21 years since Illinois last made a Final Four. That’s 2 decades of great teams not getting the job done like the 2021 team with Ayo and Kofi, or the 2024 team with TSJ. It’s 2 decades of frustrating exits, near-misses, and “maybe next year”.
We trust Brad Underwood. We believe in this program. However, that doesn’t mean we can assume this will come around year after year. We simply cannot take this run for granted.
Fandom Like No Other
If you need proof of the type of fanbase we are, just rewatch the videos you have probably seen 100 times to this point.
The excitement is one thing, but I think the pride of being an Illinois fan is what really stands out. That’s what makes the University of Illinois different. We love our school in the middle of Central Illinois and want everybody to know about it.
People in the national media recognize it, too. Charles Barkley answered the question on CBS’s pre-game coverage of the Elite 8 games about who has the best fans in college basketball by emphatically stating Illinois.
Rob Dauster from the Field of 68 also acknowledged the passion and tried to educate his audience just how dedicated Illinois fans really are: “Do people fully understand how insane Illinois fans are? And they’re the beautiful kind of insane. They are going to show up in Indy in DROVES. I can’t wait.”
Show Up. Be Loud. Paint the Town Orange.
Next stop: a matchup with UConn in Indianapolis, with the entire college basketball world watching.
This is where programs don’t just win games, they can create a legacy for generations and define how they are perceived for years to come.
And it’s not just the players on the floor doing that. It’s the fans in the stands. The noise. The energy. The presence. Illinois fans are known for traveling. Now it’s time to prove it on the biggest stage in Indianapolis.
If you’re going to Indy (which I assume will be many), be loud and be relentless. Take over the city and make it impossible for observers to ignore the sheer force and number of Illinois fans.
If you’re watching from Champaign, Chicago, or anywhere else, bring that same energy. Pack the bars. Fill the living rooms. Because this is more than just a game now. This is a chance to represent everything that comes with being part of this University. The history, the pride, the loyalty, and the “beautiful kind of insane” Rob Dauster eloquently put.
We’ve waited a long time for this. Through all the ups and downs, all the “almosts,” all the seasons that didn’t quite get here, this is the payoff. So don’t treat it like just another Saturday.
Show up. Show out. And make sure the entire country knows exactly what Illinois basketball and Illinois fans are all about. Because moments like this don’t come around often. And this one deserves everything we’ve got.
