Rumors have been swirling for days that Phil Foden is open to an exit from Manchester City. Where the English star ends up is a mystery, though.
Maybe…just maybe there is a little nugget included in a report from TEAMtalk journalist Graeme Bailey that gives a clue on one unexpected club, which could put its hat in the ring for the 25-year-old:
Sources indicate that Foden’s representatives have quietly explored potential alternatives as part of their due diligence, assessing what options may exist should
contract talks stall.
Among those monitoring the situation is City legend Vincent Kompany, who is believed to admire Foden and would be interested in bringing him to Bayern Munich.
Despite that external interest, Manchester City remain firmly in control of the situation. Indeed, sources understand that director of football Hugo Viana is leading negotiations and is confident that an agreement will be reached.
Internally, Foden is viewed as one of the finest academy products in the club’s history, and there is a strong desire to ensure his long-term future remains at the Etihad Stadium.
BFW Commentary
Bailey is a respected journalist, so there could be some merit to Kompany having interest. However, is a move for Foden even viable for Bayern Munich? That is very questionable.
At 25-years-old, Foden is in his prime with a contract ending in 2027. If there is a time for him to be moved, it is this summer. If true, having Kompany as a backer is a massive plus, but with Harry Kane already in tow, Bayern Munich could be a destination that would be appealing to a player — allegedly — looking for a fresh start like Foden.
So…is this realistic?
That is hard to say, but the leanings are…probably not. Manchester City will require a big transfer fee (his Transfermarkt value is €80 million as a point of reference) and how he would fit at Bayern Munich is a massive question. The Bavarians would almost assuredly not be inclined to pay anywhere near that much for a player who would not have a defined starting role at the club.
So…done deal, it’s a no-go, correct?
Again, most likely, but if there was a scenario that would allow this to be palatable for Bayern Munich, it would only be if there is massive internal doubt about the viability of a return to his previous form for Jamal Musiala or if there was some other unexpected player exit on the horizon, which seems very doubtful. Maybe, the only caveat to those would be if Bayern Munich sees Foden as an option to play both attacking midfield and wing. Per some reports, Bayern Munich is looking for a back-up to Luis Díaz and maybe a long-term successor. Could Foden be that guy?
Eh, we are not sure it would work for Foden or for Bayern Munich given his expected cost.
Maybe Kompany is truly interested and maybe Foden would be open to such a move, but it sure seems like it would be a longshot to happen and take a series of bad events to even get Bayern Munich to consider such a move.
