The 2025 Club World Cup made for an unusually busy summer for participating clubs — and for Bayern Munich, it was a tournament that ended bitterly after Jamal Musiala’s devastating injury and quarterfinals exit after a loss to Paris Saint-Germain.
However, in another view, the tournament was a big success for Bayern. Not only for the financial rewards, which were considerable, but for the way it helped Vincent Kompany and the squad springboard into the season.
“This Club World Cup was a huge success
for us,” executive board member for sport Max Eberl reflected following Bayern’s 4-1 win over FC Köln in the DFB-Pokal (as captured by Tz). “Even though we were unfortunately eliminated dramatically against PSG, with Jamal’s injury. But as a group, those four weeks we spent together were extraordinary. Then we had a very short preseason, which Vini never really emphasized.”
Bayern was able to enter the season on a tear and now have reeled off 14 straight wins in all competitions — a European record. And it all began with the summer tourney.
Bayern Munich traveled to Cologne for a midweek DFB-Pokal tilt with FC Köln.
Heading into the match, the Bavarians were riding high, but the squad knew that FC Köln would not be an easy out in front of its home crowd. Ultimately, Bayern Munich pulled out a 4-1 victory doing exactly what they have done to every other opponent it has had of late — wear them down and pounce.
