The United States Men’s National Team are back on the field this afternoon as they take on Australia in their second match in Group D at the 2026 World Cup. The USMNT hope to continue the winning ways against the Socceroos.
The USMNT throttled Paraguay 4-1 in their opening match, the largest margin of victory and largest number of goals ever scored by a United States men’s team in a World Cup. Everything about the opener felt perfect outside of Paraguay’s lone goal. However, they need to now put that
in the rearview and focus on Australia, who beat Türkiye 2-0 in what was one of the bigger surprises of the opening set of matches. The winner gets sole possession of first place and, depending on what happens later on when Türkiye faces Paraguay, could even win the group and secure their place in the Round of 32.
Like when the two teams faced each other back in October, the USMNT knows that Australia will try to bunker and counter. They have the players to deal with that and to hopefully not let any counterattack get behind them. There is also the health concerns of winger Christian Pulisic, who was removed due at halftime of the Paraguay match due to calf tightness. His status has been 50-50 all week long, and we’ll see if he can give it a go. But, first place in Group D hangs in the balance, and Mauricio Pochettino will want his group to come out swinging like they did a week ago and try to put goals on the board. It’s Juneteenth, and Americans hope that holiday can come with another USMNT win.
