
It’s probably not wise to draw sweeping conclusions about any team’s performance in week one of the NFL season.
However, examining the Packers home opener on its face does give us some insights about the state of each team as of Sunday, September 7th.
The Detroit Lions that entered Lambeau were not yet fully formed, and probably won’t be for a few weeks. They’ve lost both their top coordinators and have had to completely remake their interior offensive line.
The lack of gelling on the offensive line
is exactly what Packers DC Jeff Hafley looked to exploit – and boy did he.
The addition of Micah Parsons obviously made playing mind games with Detroit’s offense much easier, but the game plan even before that acquisition was probably going to be much the same. Play fast and physically, win the line of scrimmage, and pressure Jared Goff.
Does yesterday’s game mean the Packers are going to the Super Bowl and the Lions have been relegated to the bottom of the division? It most certainly does not.
But for the moment, Packers fans can revel in the fact that their team came out of the gate knowing the score, and put on a masterclass in exposing their opponent’s current weaknesses.
Yikes! For the Detroit Lions, it’s hard to imagine a worse offensive start – Growing pains were expected — but it’s hard to imagine the Lions opening the season in worse fashion.
It’s a new day for the Packers, and this was one helluva coming-out party – “Oh yeah, it was definitely different,” All-Pro safety Xavier McKinney said. “[Micah Parsons] didn’t even play the whole game. Once we get him rolling, it’s gonna be a problem.”
