The Los Angeles Rams are reportedly exploring the wide receiver trade market, and finding a legitimate downfield threat could be exactly what their offense needs to regain consistency. According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, the Rams are looking into potential wide receiver additions as they evaluate their options ahead of the NFL trade deadline.
Los Angeles needs a receiver who can consistently win one-on-one matchups and force opposing defenses to respect the deep ball. With defenses capable of crowding the intermediate areas of the field, adding another explosive playmaker could create more opportunities for Matthew Stafford, Davante Adams and Puka Nacua.
Three potential trade targets stand out: Brian Thomas Jr. of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Josh Downs of the Indianapolis Colts and George Pickens of the Dallas Cowboys.
Thomas would be an intriguing option because of his combination of size, speed and vertical ability. The former first-round pick has the physical tools to stretch defenses and win contested catches, giving Stafford another weapon capable of turning a routine completion into a significant gain.
Downs offers a different skill set. The Colts receiver is particularly dangerous working underneath and through the middle of the field, where his quickness and route-running ability can create separation. While he may not provide the same vertical threat as Thomas, he could give the Rams another reliable option against man coverage.
Pickens might be the most established big-play threat of the group. His ability to win contested catches, separate downfield and capitalize on isolated coverage would address a major need in Los Angeles. However, acquiring him could come with a higher asking price, depending on Dallas’ willingness to move him.
Ultimately, the Rams need another receiver for their starting lineup with the long term injury of Davante Adams. They need someone who can consistently beat defensive backs without help. If general manager Les Snead finds the right deal, a receiver trade could give Los Angeles’ offense another dimension for the second half of the season.
