Average away goals predicted:
2.9Confidence of Roker Report’s writers: 7.75/10
Predicting a win for the Lads: 100%
Martin Wanless (Cautious Optimist) says…
Score prediction: Torreense 1 Sunderland 3
We need a win to get a bit of confidence and hopefully this landmark game will provide that opportunity.
We’ll need to change the team significantly so we should see some players who’ve not featured much get a run out, which may be a good thing on a number of levels.
Key differentiator: Omar Alderete should play
and will be a rock at the back
Confidence: 5/10
Bold call: All three Sunderland scorers to have played for the under 21s this season.
Malc Dugdale (Scarred happy clapper) says…
Score prediction: Torreense 0 Sunderland 2
While many see this as a doddle we thought that about Port Vale away in another cup last season and look where that got us.
We will have to take these guys seriously – they can clearly win a game they see as a cup final or they would not have had the results that won them silverware from the second tier in Portugal.
I’d like to see a few lessons learned from the Brighton and Man City games, a solid performance in front of 4-5000 mad Lads fans. A professional 2-0 away win will be perfect for me, and no injuries please.
Key differentiator: The opposition fan and commentator Gav chatted to mentioned they don’t do well against strong physicality, so we have to bully these and make that count.
Confidence: 7/10.
Bold call: An away goal in each half will sort this out.
Jack Howe-Gingell (Eternal optimist) says…
Score prediction: Torreense 0 Sunderland 4
It’s been a bit of a rough start to our league campaign. Difficult runs oof fixtures happen and we were blessed with something simpler last season. Playing 3/4 of the top four with a massive break in the middle, injuring two key players, was always likely to be a tough ask and has proved so with 0 points out of 9 available.
Torreense have done wonderfully to qualify for this competition so shouldn’t be taken lightly but the lads should be all over this one. A good opportunity to show some attacking force and get the confidence up ahead of another big game on Sunday vs Bournemouth.
Key differentiator: A few fresh changes plus there is a clear gulf in level, without disrespect to Torreense. I doubt we’d even play them in pre-season.
Confidence: 10/10
Bold call: Dayann Methalie with a brace.
“Champion” Will Jones (Heart over head) says…
Score prediction: Torreense 0 Sunderland 3
After that flat performance against Brighton, this is the perfect chance to put things right. Torreense are playing in the second tier of Portuguese football, so with the quality we have in the squad, there really shouldn’t be any excuses.
We need a reaction, a bit more urgency and a performance that gets us back on track. A European away day is great, but we need to take care of business as well. Hopefully the lads go out there, get an early goal and make it a comfortable evening.
Key differentiator: The gulf in quality between the two squads.
Confidence: 8/10.
Bold call: We’ll be three goals up by half time.
Matty Foster (Pragmatist) says…
Score prediction: Torreense 0 Sunderland 2
Europe will hopefully be a welcome distraction from a tough start to the Premier League.
And what is a better distraction than a lovely little jolly to Portugal for thousands of Sunderland fans!
Torreense surprised everyone by winning the cup against top flight opponents last season (sound familiar?), and regardless of their league position, we simply cannot underestimate them.
Key differentiator: There will be vast changes in the squad and that will be the difference, for better or worse.
Confidence: 8/10
Bold call: Every goalscorer will score their first ever goal for Sunderland.
Anthony Gair (Depreciating optimist) says…
Score prediction: Torreense 1 Sunderland 5
Sunderland will set up to play as they did in the League Cup, a lot more attacking and naively youthful minded going forward, with some experience at the back.
We’ll win comfortably.
Key differentiator: The fringe players that start the game fighting for their place in the team will outperform that shite we watched on Saturday afternoon with guile and passion.
Confidence: 10/10.
Bold call: A non-first team regular will score 2 goals.
Gary Winter (Glass almost empty) says…
Score prediction: Torreense 0 Sunderland 1
It’s a real shame that our first Europa League away match feels like it’s just a bit of a nuisance.
Maybe that’s just me, but having made a slow start in the league makes this an unwanted distraction, on top of the fact it’s not a glamorous tie, and there’s little to gain facing second division opposition from Portugal.
I’d feel very differently about this if we were sitting in mid-table.
Key differentiator: Hopefully fresh legs and wholesale changes for us, although that seldom actually works well and often results in very disjointed displays.
Confidence: 6/10
Bold call: One of our defenders will score first.
Brett Lyons-Davis (Gut feeling guy) says…
Score prediction: Torreense 0 Sunderland 3
After a poor performance against Brighton we need a response in the first European away day of the season.
This could be the ideal opportunity to get our season going.
Key differentiator: The change of grounds – like when a non-league team move their 3rd FA cup time to a Premier League stadium to get the money in, they lose their home advantage.
Confidence: 8/10
Bold call: The first goal scorer will be an Aquarius.
Last game thoughts…
The performance against Brighton at home should have been a reset after a couple of tough results, but we ended up adding another loss to them, and a poorer performance than both the games against the top two.
Today has to be used to pick us up by our boot straps, regain some form and confidence and to get three points in the Europa League to get us a step closer to qualifying for the later stages.
Last game predictions…
There was areal mixed bag of wins losses and draws before the Brighton game, indicative of the mixed confidence across the fan base right now.
Some interesting bold calls again, some of which brought points to our writers when points for the lads were nowhere to be seen.
Predictions table and standings
Matty and Gary remain tied for first, and Will leapfrogged Malc into 3rd with his point for predicting a loss.
Nothing in it all the way down to Gair, but Jack could do with a boost soon to stay in touch with the lads ahead of him.
How the points are awarded
Just a quick reminder of how we allocate points to our match-by-match predictions:
- Correct score = Three points
- Correct outcome (but not correct score) = One point
- Correct Bold Call = One point
- Possible deductions for being lazy and not submitting on time = a two-point deduction.
