No. 18/14 (AP/Coaches) Iowa State closes out its preseason schedule this afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena against Northwestern. Both squads enter the matchup seeking a defensive tune-up after dropping their exhibition openers. T.J. Otzelberger’s Cyclones fell 83-80 to Creighton at Hilton Coliseum,
while Chris Collins’ Wildcats dropped a 70-64 decision on the road against Illinois State.
With Otzelberger entering his sixth season leading Iowa State (124-53 record) and Collins entering his 14th season at Northwestern (209-209 record), both head coaches are aiming to finalize their main rotations before the official regular season begins.
The roster storylines bring added intrigue to this Big Ten/Big 12 exhibition match. Fifth year guard Tamin Lipsey anchors the Cyclones’ backcourt, holding the Iowa State school record with 314 career steals. The Ames native did not play in the Creighton exhibition.
Iowa State will continue to adjust without guard Killyan Toure, who underwent shoulder surgery in August and is expected back in January.
Sophomore forward Tre Singleton makes his return to Evanston after spending his freshman year at Northwestern, where he started 31 games and averaged 7.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Northwestern counters with returning sophomore guard Jake West (7.7 ppg during conference play last season) and junior Angelo Ciaravino (6.3 ppg).
