The Jacksonville Jaguars’ secondary depth has taken a sizable hit over the past week. The team likely didn’t have plans to overhaul their secondary depth and special teams units entering Week 5; they were forced into it. With London travel approaching and the injury list growing, Jacksonville had no choice but to add to the roster. Between injuries, a roster waiver, and two new additions to the 53-man roster, there is a lot to unpack heading into the team’s trip overseas.
S Caleb Ransaw to IR (Knee)
The most significant development
came on Tuesday when the Jaguars officially announced that safety Caleb Ransaw is being placed on Injured Reserve for the second consecutive season. The 2025 third-round pick suffered a knee injury during the first quarter of last Sunday’s Week 4 win over the Cincinnati Bengals and did not return to the game. For a player whose NFL career has been somewhat defined by injury interruptions, the timing is particularly difficult.
In 2025, Ransaw was placed on IR during the preseason with a foot injury, costing him his entire rookie season. He returned in 2026 and became a contributor on both defense and special teams, ending his 2026 campaign with 10 combined tackles on 59 defensive snaps, a 23 percent defensive snap rate, while logging 55 percent of the team’s special teams snaps on 51 plays. Ransaw’s Week 5 IR placement makes him eligible to return beginning in Week 9 if he is ready.
CB Montaric Brown (Hamstring)
Compounding the secondary’s situation further, starting cornerback Montaric Brown was inactive against the Bengals with a hamstring injury. His return timeline heading into the London trip will be one of the more closely watched designations on the weekly injury report.
CB Christian Braswell Waived Injured (Knee)
Alongside the Ransaw announcement, the Jaguars waived cornerback Christian Braswell. Braswell, who was playing on a 2026 one-year exclusive rights free agent contract, had been ruled out of the Bengals game with a knee injury of his own. With his status for the coming weeks and the exact injury details uncertain, the roster required immediate depth for Week 5. It is a disappointing end to what was a competitive training camp and preseason for the fourth-year cornerback.
S Eric Murray (Concussion)
Eric Murray and Ray Lane collided in coverage on Bengals tight end Mike Gesicki, who hauled in a 15-yard third-quarter touchdown reception. Murray took the hit, went to the ground, while later ruled out with a concussion. With Murray in the league’s concussion protocol, his availability for Sunday’s Week 5 matchup is in limbo, as of Tuesday. Should Murray be unable to clear the protocol in time to make the London flight, Antonio Johnson and Lane would be expected to start.
Roster Response(s)
CB Alijah Huzzie Signed
With three secondary contributors simultaneously unavailable, Jacksonville moved quickly to add additional depth, signing both Jaylon Jones and Alijah Huzzie to the 53-man roster.
Huzzie, the 5-foot-10, 193-pound former North Carolina cornerback, was signed off the Houston Texans’ practice squad. He was considered a mid-round prospect during the 2025 draft process, and graded by multiple teams as one of the top five nickelback options in that class. However, that was before an ACL tear sustained during East-West Shrine Bowl practices in January, sent him sliding off April draft boards. Following the recent injury, the Houston Texans signing him to an undrafted free agent three-year deal following the draft.
Huzzie spent the bulk of his 2025 rookie season on the Texans’ Injured Reserve list before being activated in November. He played one special teams snap in Week 15 before getting his first meaningful NFL action in the Texans’ regular season finale against the Indianapolis Colts: 22 defensive snaps and 14 special teams plays, finishing with four tackles and an interception.
The move to add Huzzie also carries the added gamesmanship of the Jaguars poaching him from a division rival ahead of a London matchup against those same Texans in Week 6.
CB Jaylon Jones Added
Jones is a more experienced option of the cornerback additions, bringing four seasons of NFL exposure to a room. The 2022 undrafted free agent spent his first three seasons with the Chicago Bears from 2022 through 2024, appearing in a combined 56 career games and compiling 101 tackles, four pass breakups, and two forced fumbles. He then signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2025 before being waived during final roster cuts. He entered 2026 being placed on the Chicago Bears’ Injured Reserve during their own roster reduction, before receiving an injury settlement release.
Jalen Huskey’s Expected Debut
The secondary additions also set the stage for what figures to be third-round safety Jalen Huskey’s 2026 regular-season debut in London. Huskey was a healthy scratch in each of Jacksonville’s first four games, with Rayaun Lane and Caleb Ransaw manning the backup safety and special teams roles. With Ransaw now on IR and the safety room carrying its own limitations, Huskey’s moment appears to have arrived. Jacksonville is scheduled for back-to-back London appearances in Week 5 against the Eagles and Week 6 against the Texans, and Huskey’s debut in the first of those two matchups will be the likely route with his knowledge of the playbook and Eric Murray’s injury status also up in the air.
