Former Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has revealed that his preferred move this summer was actually a return to Italy.
However, the Magpies’ decision to demand a humongous fee in exchange for his services made such a transfer impossible before Tottenham eventually secured his signature.
The Italy international completed a £100 million move to Spurs earlier this summer, ending his three-year spell at St. James’ Park, but has now shed fresh light on the decision that led him to north London.
Speaking after joining Tottenham and appearing in the first two preseason games for the Spurs, Tonali admitted he and his family hoped to return to play in Italy’s Serie A, a move that was blocked by Newcastle because of the club’s valuation of the player.
“We had decided to come back to Italy, but it was impossible for the money,” Tonali said. “England was our solution, and we found the best solution in England for me, for my career, for my football, for my happiness, for my family. I spoke with two teams. I understood after 10, 15 minutes that Tottenham would be my next team.”
Tonali explained that Tottenham quickly separated itself from other suitors, with new head coach Roberto De Zerbi and the club’s brass convincing him almost immediately.
“When you speak with a team, the first impression is a big thing and my impression was very positive,” Tonali said. “When you are happy after a 10-minute chat, it’s everything – everything is perfect.
“They spoke with 100 per cent passion, 100 per cent seriousness. Roberto and the director made the difference to the deal.”
That said, the 26-year-old also made clear his departure had nothing to do with dissatisfaction at Newcastle, praising former manager Eddie Howe and saying he wanted the Magpies to receive the strongest possible transfer fee.
“Eddie was fantastic for me,” Tonali said. “I wanted the best deal for Newcastle because they deserve everything.”
