The Syracuse Orange to restock the wide receiver room through the transfer portal. Penn State wide receiver Matthew Outten has transferred to the Orange, according to multiple reports. The Portsmouth, Virginia native will have four years of eligibility remaining.
Outten didn’t feature for Penn State during 2025, his freshman season. He did have a Syracuse offer coming out of I.C. Norcom High School. Outten was a four-star recruit coming out of high school by On3, 247Sports and ESPN. He was a top-10
athlete in the class of 2025 by the same outlets. 247Sports ranked Outten inside its top-200 recruits nationally.
To make our editor, Kevin, happy, Outten was also a notable track athlete in high school. He competed in the state championships in the 55 and 100 meters races. Outten also ran in the 4×100 and 4×200 relay races.
Outten becomes the fourth wide receiver that the Orange have signed from the transfer portal this offseason. He joins Boise State/Glendale CC wide receiver Zamondre Merriweather, Miami (OH) wide receiver Cole Weaver and Florida State wide receiver Elijah Moore.
Syracuse’s wide receiver room was depleted this offseason with six players entering the portal this offseason. Johntay Cook, Darrell Gill, Jaylan Hornsby, Emmanuel Ross, Gabe Daniels and Ja’Meer Thomas all entered the transfer portal. Senior wide receiver Justus Ross-Simmons is also out of eligibility. Umari Hatcher did enter the portal as well but withdrew. He’s seeking a waiver to play one more year at Syracuse. The Orange are adding four true freshman wide receivers to the program for 2026, highlighted by five-star recruit Calvin Russell III.
Outten becomes the eighth offensive player and 15th overall player to join the Orange from the transfer portal this offseason. Along with Merriweather, Weaver and Moore, Syracuse has received commitments from South Carolina tight end Michael Smith, LSU running back Ju’Juan Johnson, Jackson State running back Ahmad Miller, Georgia State defensive tackle Jartavius Flounoy, Toledo linebacker Chris D’Appolonia, UT Martin edge rusher Keyshawn Johnson, Maryland defensive lineman Dillan Fontus, Kennesaw State QB Amari Odom, Toledo defensive back Amare Snowden, Western Kentucky DB Nazir Ward and UNLV edge rusher Tunmise Adeleye.
