Vincent Kompany has gone from strength to strength in 2025. Starting off the year under a certain amount of pressure at Bayern Munich due to an early DFB Pokal exit and struggles in the UEFA Champions League league phase, he has overseen Bayern reclaiming the Bundesliga title, win the DFL Supercup and build up a phenomenal record throughout the 2025-26 season, at the time of writing.
This all sees the former Anderlecht head coach win the Raymond Goethals trophy, awarded to the best Belgian coach of
the year. Though he could not be there in person to accept the award, his father did while Kompany later commented on it:
“It’s an incredible honour. This award means a lot to me,” Kompany said, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “Even more so when you see the other names on the list of winners and the history associated with the Trophy. Raymond remains an example for all Belgian coaches, but also for those working beyond our borders.”
Goethals was a highly successful Belgian manager with many great claims to fame, despite certain controversies, but perhaps his greatest claim to fame was finding success abroad through his 1993 European Cup success with Olympique de Marseille, which remains the French club’s only victory in the competition to this day.
Who knows? Perhaps Kompany will be able to continue in Goethals’ footsteps and make his big claim to fame this season.
