Championship cross country season returns to Mid-Missouri this Friday as Missouri hosts the 202 SEC Cross Country Championship at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia, Mo.
“I think the familiarity of being at home has allowed us to be a little bit more intentional with actual course preparation versus, okay we’re getting ready to compete,” head distance coach Kyle Levermore said. “We really know where our strengths and weaknesses are on that course,”
It marks the second time in history that
Mizzou has hosted the SEC Championships, following its inaugural turn as host in 2021 since joining the SEC. The women’s 6,000-meter race is scheduled for 10:08 a.m. CT, followed by the men’s 8,000-meter race at 10:45 a.m. CT. SEC Network will broadcast live coverage beginning at 10:00 a.m. CT.
Elite SEC field heads to Columbia
The meet brings a heavy contingent of nationally ranked programs to Gans Creek.
The women’s 16-team field features five teams ranked in the top 30, headlined by the No. 4-ranked Florida Gators. On the men’s side, four of the 14 competing squads hold top-30 rankings, including three inside the national top 10. In the SEC preseason coaches’ poll, Mizzou was picked fifth on the women’s side and seventh on the men’s side.
Veteran leadership on familiar ground
For Tyler Freiner, Friday’s championship represents the culmination of years of physical progression and team leadership. Since coming to Mizzou as a freshman, Freiner has built on his muscle, consistency and endurance in preparation for the racing season.
Now serving as a core leader on a roster that has embraced a tight-knit culture, Freiner views running on his home course as both a comfort and an added motivator.
“Being here at Gans at home, it’s a course that I’ve run for the past six to eight years or so,” Freiner said. “I think there’s a few other Missouri guys that feel the same way on the team, and we don’t have to travel this year, which is really nice, last year was in Knoxville. So you’re kind of saving your body in that way. You’re sleeping better and the extra motivation of let’s show up on our own course.”
Nuttycombe Invitational recap
The women’s squad came out strong for Mizzou, posting ninth-place overall, while the men took 31st.
Some highlights from the meet were Monica Wanjiku, who placed 20th overall for the Tigers with a time of 19:43.5. Alongside her, Kobi Walker finished in 35th at 20:04.4.
As for the men’s squad, Jean Kipchumba made his Mizzou debut, taking 86th overall for the Tigers at 23:48.9. Elijah Limo finished behind him in 96th overall at 23:54.8.
Both the women and men’s teams finished ahead of some of the toughest SEC contenders. For the women, they finished ahead of No. 5 Iowa State and No. 11 Northwestern. For the men’s squad, they finished ahead of Oklahoma.
With that in mind, Freiner enters Friday and the rest of the postseason with high expectations for himself.
‘‘I think top-30 in both SEC’s and regionals would be a really great spot.” Freiner said. “Last year, I was around 50th, so I’d like to think this year, feeling fit, and I’ve really timed out my training a lot better this year.”
Capitalizing on course knowledge
Since opening in September 2019, the Gans Creek facility has become a statement for Mizzou’s distance runners.
Having competed on the course repeatedly throughout the regular season, the Tigers should be able to use similar race patterns from earlier meets, to hopefully help fine-tune their execution on Friday.
“While our course has good footing and it’s really spectator-friendly, it does wind a lot. So, getting out on our course is necessary. I think if anything, it helps me program certain things into our training sessions.”
Each Mizzou squad enters Friday having already raced this season at the course, during the Gans Creek Classic Friday, Sept. 25. Alongside this, they are able to practice on the daily basis with this course, providing them a slight edge compared to the other contenders.
“It’ll be a game of inches for first to sixth on the men’s side,” Levermore said. “And I think on the women’s side it’ll be a little bit, probably more of a four of five team battle. I feel like given what we know about all those team, it’s going to be a matter of, we have top run man to man a little bit.”
Culture, mindset and managing pressure
For the Tigers, mental preparation and roster unity carry just as much weight as race strategy when lining up against the conference’s elite.
“Pressure is something that you feel when you’re not in control of yourself,” Levermore said. “If you can take care of the things you control, then you’re not going to feel external pressure.”
Now in his fourth season leading the program, Levermore has acknowledged the deep bond between the men’s and women’s rosters as a driving force behind their growth this fall.
Alongside this, the anticipation of running in front of a loud home crowd at Gans Creek adds an extra layer of motivation and energy for the squad. With Mizzou students receiving free admission and thousands of local supporters expected to line the course, the Tigers will turn that environment into a distinct advantage.
