Bayern Munich continued its preseason preparations with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Jeju SK during its summer tour of South Korea. While the result itself was fine, the bigger takeaway was another valuable opportunity for Vincent Kompany to evaluate his squad in a competitive setting.
As is often the case in preseason, the match was about much more than the scoreline. Kompany rotated his squad, giving valuable minutes to players fighting for roles ahead of the new campaign while allowing others
to continue building their match fitness. Against a determined Jeju SK side, Bayern Munich was tested throughout the contest and had to work for the win.
After the game, Kompany praised both teams for producing an entertaining and competitive friendly.
“Both teams spent a lot of energy today. They showed that you can make a good game out of a friendly. It was interesting for Jeju and for us because we were able to see some players who don’t play often. Generally speaking, it was a positive game with good intensity and no injuries,” Kompany said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
That final point may have been the most important of all. Preseason is about preparing for the long season ahead, and avoiding injuries while building rhythm is just as valuable as winning matches.
The performance also offered another glimpse into the depth Bayern Munich will rely on throughout the season. Players outside the usual starting XI had an opportunity to impress, while the team continued adapting to Kompany’s ideas and maintaining the high-intensity style that defined last season.
With another preseason victory secured and valuable minutes spread throughout the squad, Bayern Munich can head into the next stage of their Asian tour with growing confidence and, just as importantly, a clean bill of health.
