Newcastle United continues to assess potential January opportunities after significantly reshaping Matthias Jaissle’s midfield during the summer.
TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey reported that Newcastle has been contacted by intermediaries over Ruben Loftus-Cheek, with AC Milan prepared to consider letting the midfielder leave in January. Tottenham, Everton, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, Sunderland and Fulham have also been approached.
“Intermediaries have spoken to a host of clubs about the availability
of the former Chelsea pair, with Tottenham, Newcastle, Everton, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, Sunderland and Fulham all contacted,” Bailey reported, referring to Loftus-Cheek and Fikayo Tomori.
Loftus-Cheek, 30, has fallen down Milan’s pecking order and is entering the final six months of his contract. Bailey reported that neither the midfielder’s camp nor Tomori’s has held talks with Milan over a new agreement.
“We understand Milan are willing to do business on both players as they look to create space in their squad and give themselves greater room for manoeuvre in the January market,” Bailey reported.
That creates the possibility of a cut-price midseason departure rather than Milan risking losing Loftus-Cheek for nothing next summer. Bailey added that it remains unclear whether any January deal would be permanent or initially structured as a loan.
The former Chelsea midfielder also brings considerable Premier League experience and can operate in several midfield roles, including further forward. There is no indication Newcastle has opened negotiations or decided to pursue Loftus-Cheek. For now, the club has simply been made aware that Milan is willing to discuss his departure sooner rather than later.
Would Loftus-Cheek make sense as an experienced January addition for Jaissle, or should Newcastle continue prioritizing younger players? Share your thoughts in the comments.
