Not since the days of Napoleon have the Pyramids seen a fight like this.
On Saturday, unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk puts his WBC title on the line against former GLORY kickboxing heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven in a 12-round heavyweight boxing match taking place at the Pyramids of Giza, in Egypt. Dubbed “Glory in Giza,” the event figures to be more spectacle than anything, with the famous World Wonder in the background of a lineal heavyweight title fight, and now fans know exactly
what that will look like.
On Tuesday, Usyk and Verhoeven faced off for the first time on fight week, with the Pyramids and the Great Sphinx prominently featured in the background, a striking image previewing Saturday’s fight.
The lineal heavyweight champion of the world and the first male fighter to become a three-time undisputed champion in the four-belt era of boxing, Usyk is widely considered one of the best fighters of his generation and among the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world. He last fought in July, knocking out Daniel Dubois in the fifth round.
The longest-reigning GLORY heavyweight champion, Verhoeven is considered among the greatest kickboxers of all-time. He last competed in June, winning a decision over Artem Vakhitov at GLORY 100. Verhoeven has one previous boxing match to his name, a second-round KO over Janos Finfera in 2014.
Usyk vs. Rico takes place this Saturday, broadcast live on DAZN starting at 11 a.m. ET.
