Florida State Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell took to the podium on Monday for his weekly press conference, detailing the mindset of his squad after suffering their first loss on Friday and heading into a major matchup vs. the No. 2 Miami Hurricanes this weekend.
“We’re 0-1 in conference, that’s the one opportunity we’ve had, but this week we have a great opportunity in one of the best rivalry games in all of sports, not just college football,” he said in his opening statement. “Night game, prime
time, wonderful stage to be able to show this team, who we are, what we’re about and the response we’re going to have.“
“It’s one of the games, you come to Florida State, you get to play in this rivalry, and it’s something that’s going to be remembered for the rest of your life.”
Norvell, reflecting on Friday’s loss, repeated his line from that night that it was one of those games where “you can take 20-30 plays throughout and anything goes differently. Final result would have changed, but it didn’t change the overall areas of improvement and things that we’re going to need to correct because obviously, there’s some things that showed up that are unacceptable to what we expect out of ourselves and how we want to play.”
“There’s a lot of areas of growth that need to happen. I’ve seen this team perform at a very high level, I know what we’re capable of and have full expectations that’s where we’re going.”
Norvell spoke on the two players that likely will define Miami’s game against the Seminoles — quarterback Carson Beck and defensive lineman Ruben Bain Jr.
“[Beck has] kind of been through it — he’s played at a really high level throughout his career, had his challenges and times that he’s had to go through, and you can see that here in Miami,” Norvell said. “He’s feeling very comfortable for what they’re asking him to do….very accurate, he seems to know where he wants to go with the ball, getting the ball out quickly and has some guys on the perimeter that are a great supporting cast for what he’s doing.”
“Ruben is playing at an elite level. He can move all across the defensive front. You see that, his motor, physicality, the productivity he’s had here in the early part of the season. That’s going to be a great challenge for us.”
