The Buffalo Bills added some veteran experience to their defensive line this week, signing defensive tackle Greg Gaines to a one-year contract ahead of their second preseason game.
Gaines joins Buffalo as an experienced interior defensive lineman entering his eighth NFL season. The 6-foot-1, 312-pound defensive tackle was originally selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent his first four seasons with the Rams and was part of Los Angeles’ Super Bowl championship
team during the 2021 season. Gaines then spent the last three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2023 through 2025.
On the surface, the contract is fairly straightforward. According to Spotrac, Gaines signed a one-year, $1.3 million Veteran Salary Benefit contract with Buffalo that includes $137,500 guaranteed signing bonus and a $50,000 Week 1 roster bonus.
Gaines’ experience is important when looking at his contract. He has seven credited NFL seasons, which establishes his minimum salary for 2026.
But the actual mechanics of the deal are a little more interesting than the $1.3 million number suggests. Thanks to the NFL’s Veteran Salary Benefit (VSB), the Bills can pay Gaines the veteran minimum appropriate for his experience while carrying a substantially smaller number against their salary cap.
For a team where every bit of cap space matters, it’s another example of how NFL teams can use the collective bargaining agreement to add an experienced player without paying the full cap price.
What is the NFL veteran minimum salary in 2026?
NFL minimum base salaries increase depending on the number of credited seasons a player has accumulated.
For the 2026 season, the minimum salaries are:
- Rookie (0 credited seasons): $885,000
- 1 credited season: $1,005,000
- 2 credited seasons: $1,075,000
- 3 credited seasons: $1,145,000
- 4-6 credited seasons: $1,215,000
- 7+ credited seasons: $1,300,000
Gaines entered the NFL in 2019 and has accumulated seven credited seasons from 2019 through 2025. That puts him in the highest veteran-minimum category. His minimum base salary for 2026 is therefore $1.3 million.
How does a player earn a credited season?
A credited season is not simply determined by whether a player was under contract with an NFL organization. Generally, a player earns a credited season by being on a team’s active roster, inactive list, Injured Reserve (IR) or Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list for three or more regular-season or postseason games.
A player can also qualify after being released through an injury settlement if the financial compensation is equivalent to at least three regular-season game checks.
Time spent exclusively on a practice squad or the Commissioner’s Permission List does not count toward a credited season.
Those distinctions matter because credited seasons determine several benefits under the collective bargaining agreement, including a player’s applicable minimum salary.
For Gaines, seven credited seasons means Buffalo couldn’t simply sign him for the $1.075 minimum that would apply to an experienced younger player with only 2 credited seasons.
That’s where the Veteran Salary Benefit comes into play.
So what is the NFL Veteran Salary Benefit?
The NFL’s Veteran Salary Benefit, previously known as the Minimum Salary Benefit, is designed to make experienced players more financially competitive with younger players when teams are filling out their rosters.
Without it, there’s an inherent salary-cap disadvantage to signing an experienced veteran.
Consider Gaines. His minimum salary is $1.3 million because he has seven credited seasons. A player with two credited seasons has a 2026 minimum salary of only $1.075 million.
If both players counted dollar-for-dollar against the salary cap, Buffalo would have a $225,000 cap incentive to sign the younger player, even before considering bonuses.
This scenario across the NFL means older role players could find themselves priced out of jobs simply because their collectively bargained minimum salaries are higher.
The Veteran Salary Benefit helps level that playing field.
The VSB allows teams to offer qualifying players with at least four credited seasons a one-year contract at the minimum base salary applicable to their experience. For the 2026 season, the contract may also contain up to $187,500 in additional compensation, such as signing bonuses, roster bonuses or incentives.
The key is how the contract is treated for salary-cap purposes.
Instead of counting the veteran’s full minimum base salary against the team’s cap, an eligible VSB contract receives a reduced cap charge based on the minimum salary for a player with two credited seasons. In 2026, that’s $1.075 million.
So Gaines still receives his $1.3 million veteran base salary. The Bills simply don’t have to count all $1.3 million of that base salary against their salary cap.
Breaking down Greg Gaines’ Bills contract
According to Spotrac, Gaines’ one-year deal breaks down this way:
- Veteran minimum base salary: $1,300,000
- Guaranteed at signing: $137,500
- Week 1 bonus: $50,000
- Maximum cash: $1,487,500
- Dead Cap: $137,500
The $137,500 and $50,000 bonuses combine for $187,500, exactly the amount of additional compensation permitted under a qualifying Veteran Salary Benefit contract in 2026.
That means Gaines can receive as much as $1,487,500 in cash under the deal. But that isn’t what Buffalo has to count against the salary cap.
Because Gaines’ contract qualifies for the Veteran Salary Benefit, his $1.3 million base salary is treated as the $1.075 million minimum applicable to a player with two credited seasons for cap purposes.
Buffalo’s cap calculation therefore looks like this:
- Gaines’ actual base salary: $1,300,000
- VSB-adjusted base salary for cap purposes: $1,075,000
- Guaranteed bonus: $137,500
- Week 1 bonus: $50,000
- Total cap charge: $1,262,500
- Dead Cap: $137,500
So while Gaines can collect $1,487,500, the Bills carry a cap charge of only $1,262,500.
For Buffalo, the cap math becomes:
$1,075,000 + $137,500 + $50,000 = $1,262,500.
The Bills effectively save $225,000 in salary-cap space compared with what Gaines’ contract would otherwise cost.
Why does the NFL have the Veteran Salary Benefit?
The easiest way to understand the rule is to look at the decision Buffalo would otherwise face. Suppose the Bills are choosing between Gaines and a younger defensive tackle with two credited seasons. The younger player’s minimum salary is $1.075 million. Gaines, because he has survived seven seasons in the NFL and earned the corresponding veteran minimum, must receive at least $1.3 million. Without the Veteran Salary Benefit, that would mean Gaines costs Buffalo an additional $225,000 against the salary cap simply because he’s more experienced.
That creates an unusual problem.
The NFL’s minimum salary structure rewards players for remaining in the league, but without a corresponding cap mechanism, those raises could simultaneously make experienced veterans more expensive to employ than younger players.
The VSB addresses that problem.
It essentially allows a team to pay the veteran according to his experience without taking the entire additional cost of that experience against the salary cap.
For teams, it creates an inexpensive avenue for adding proven depth. For veterans, it helps keep experience from becoming a financial liability when they’re competing against younger, cheaper players for roster spots.
And Gaines’ contract is a nearly perfect example of how the mechanism works.
Gaines is low-cost bet on experience for Buffalo
This isn’t the kind of August transaction that’s going to reshape Buffalo’s salary cap or dominate the offseason transaction ledger. But it’s a useful one.
Gaines has played seven NFL seasons, appeared in a Super Bowl-winning defense, and missed only two regular-season games during his three years in Tampa Bay. Buffalo is getting an experienced 312-pound interior defensive lineman at a point in the calendar when dependable veteran depth can become increasingly valuable.
The contract also carries relatively little financial risk.
For a team looking for veteran defensive-line help in August, that’s precisely what the Veteran Salary Benefit was designed to accomplish: keep an experienced player affordable without asking the player to take a financial penalty for having been around long enough to become a veteran.
