When Marquette women’s soccer went through their last two matches without scoring a goal on 29 total shots, it was only a matter of time before someone made the Golden Eagles pay for their problems. It wasn’t going to be Milwaukee or Northern Illinois, as MU was able to nullify their offenses as well for back to back scoreless draws.
A Baylor team ranked #17 in the country and hosting Marquette where the weather is 86 degrees when I’m checking at 9:30pm AFTER the match is over? Yeah, that’s a dangerous
spot for Marquette.
And yet, this was the only goal scored in 90 minutes.
That Aryanna Jimison strike came in the 44th minute and tipped over the balance of what was otherwise a pretty tightly contested first half otherwise.
It kind of feels like that late goal deflated the Golden Eagles as the second half got going. Baylor fired off the first five shots of the second session, and MU didn’t get their first attempt off until just before the clock hit 70:00. That’s not what you want as you hunt for the chance to beat a ranked team for the first time since 2013, but the good news is that Marquette did start putting some pressure on the Bears after that. MU outshot Baylor 5-4 the rest of the way, so they had chances even if only one shot was on goal officially. None of them actually found the net though, and so now the Golden Eagles are 3-1-3 on the year.
That goal is the first non-penalty kick goal that Marquette has given up all season, by the way. At least it was the only goal in a 1-0 loss, I guess? I mean, I suppose it being in a 2-1 win would have been better?
Up Next: Marquette returns to Milwaukee and to Valley Fields specifically for their next match. That will be this coming Sunday, September 13, when Loyola Chicago comes to town. First kick against the Ramblers is set for 1pm Central on ESPN+. Loyola is 3-2-2 on the season after getting a 1-0 win over Northern Illinois on Thursday night.
