The Cincinnati Bengals are hoping to return to the Super Bowl this season after spending some money on the defensive side of the ball. Add in Joe Burrow and the offensive talent they are returning, and you could see a world where the Bengals could return to the big game in February.
That is where an article by Richard Skinner of WKRC, which dives into the Simple Rating System from Pro Football Reference, comes into play and opens some eyes.
Despite never winning a Super Bowl, the Bengals have had three
teams finish as the runner-up, and according to the PFR measuring system, those three teams don’t even crack the five best teams.
According to the SRS, here are the five best teams:
- 2015 (rating 10.6)
- 1976 (rating 10.1)
- 2022 (rating 6.9)
- 1975 (rating 6.9)
- 1989 (rating 6.9)
What does this tell the fanbase? That, despite some ratings, a team getting hot at the right time can go a long way.
Now we hope they come out and position themselves well for a good seed heading into the playoffs this season, but even if that doesn’t happen, Zac Taylor has shown he can produce some great teams. It also shows he needs to win the big game to make the NFL finale.
Kick off is around the corner. We will see how they fare very shortly.
