This may not have garnered a lot of attention over the Summer, but Otega Oweh had a turf toe injury that kept him off the court for 10 weeks.
Now, though, the newly named SEC Preseason Player of the Year is feeling great ahead of Kentucky’s exhibition games leading into the 2025-2026 season.
“No restrictions, so that’s a blessing,” Oweh said of his toe. “I’m grateful it was just this type of injury and nothing more. I’m in every drill, every competition rep, so I’m happy.
“I was a little sore this morning,
but I was just happy to be there. Just being able to bump and compete with the guys because this group is so competitive and full of energy. Watching from the sidelines was entertaining, but being a part of it feels good.”
Oweh is the seventh Kentucky player to be named SEC Preseason Player of the Year since the award was established in 1997. Even though it’s an award for a season that hasn’t happened yet, Oweh is still grateful to earn the distinction.
“It’s a blessing for sure,” said Oweh. “When I found out, I was actually around our trainer (Brandon) Wells. He’s been helping me out with my recovery. I’m just grateful to be in this position, but it’s the preseason, and we have a long year to go.
“We’re focused on winning, and if we win, everybody gets what they want.”
Oweh was Kentucky’s leading scorer last season, and he hit a memorable game-winner against Oklahoma in the second round of the SEC Tournament after beating the Sooner with a game-winner just 15 days prior. Expectations are sky-high going into his second season in the Kentucky uniform.
