What is the story about?
Penn State’s top safety from last season is now officially a Carolina Panther, as Zakee Wheatley was selected as the 151st overall pick in the fifth round of the NFL Draft.
Throughout his PSU career, Wheatley racked up 223 total tackles and six interceptions as a safety. His pass coverage ability, closing speed, and awareness were some of the positives cited by NFL scouts, and there was plenty of chatter about him being a possible Day 2 selection, so one could look at this pick as a “steal” for Carolina.
Not only should he see plenty of action on special teams, but he should get some snaps and quickly establish himself as a quality backup who could be a starter sooner rather than later.
Congrats Zakee, and best of luck with the Panthers!
