Last season, Leon Goretzka was a role model at Bayern Munich — fighting back from a tough position to regain his place in the XI as well as, consequently, the German men’s national team.
However, it has not gotten any easier this year. Goretzka started the season in more favorable standing, partially due to Aleksandar Pavlović’s injury. But the young Pavlović, who also has earned his way into Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany side, seems preferred in the pivot when fully fit.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany
thinks of it as a good problem for everybody to have. After all, iron sharpens iron.
“As a player, you always have more pressure in a World Cup year. But I like to take advantage of the fact that the competition has a positive effect and helps us. If we look at the playing time, everyone has had a pretty similar share. If someone plays more, it’s a question of current form. I always try to choose what’s best for the team,” Kompany explained in recent comments captured by @iMiaSanMia.
The season is long and grueling, though, and injuries are mounting again — including for the unfortunate Pavlović. Can Goretzka once again seize his chance?
