Manuel Neuer has arguably written his name into the history books as one of the most notable goalkeepers in history through his incredible performances, trophy victories and how he has redefined the position. With all these accomplishments, it is unsurprising that the Bayern Munich legend has earned himself many fans who look up to his great feats.
But Neuer himself was a fan before he became so famous.
Asked by French news site L’Equipe who exactly inspired him as a child, the 2014 World Cup winner
named many notable people, including some non football ones.
“There are many. Internationally, there was Edwin van der Sar and Peter Schmeichel,” Neuer listed, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “Their footwork inspired me. In Germany, I can mention Jens Lehmann and Oliver Kahn. Each had their own qualities. I also watched a lot of Ajax football videos when I was a kid. I also played a lot of tennis. I admired Boris Becker, Michael Stich, and Steffi Graf. I had their posters in my room, and one of Michael Schumacher.”
Boris Becker certainly appreciated the mention of his name:
It seems Neuer took inspiration from many big names to improve his game to incredible heights.
