The Allianz Arena will once again take center stage in European football after UEFA awarded Munich the 2028 Champions League final. For Bayern Munich, the announcement carries plenty of significance, giving the club another opportunity to showcase its home stadium on the biggest stage in club football.
CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen welcomed the decision and highlighted what Munich has to offer as an international sporting destination.
“This is fantastic news for us: The Allianz Arena, FC Bayern, and Munich
stand for international appeal, genuine hospitality, and the highest organizational quality. UEFA knows this, and sports fans from all over the world experience it. We are delighted to be hosting the Champions League Final for the third time, following 2012 and 2025. We want to offer fans another exceptional experience and showcase Munich as a cosmopolitan, sports-loving, and exceptionally well-prepared host city. Such a major event can also provide important impetus for our bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, which we at FC Bayern wholeheartedly support. We will demonstrate once again: Munich is capable of hosting top-level sports,” said Dreesen in a release from FCBayern.com.
Dreesen’s comments also underline how the event fits into Munich’s broader ambitions. The city is supporting a bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, meaning another major international sporting event could provide a valuable showcase for its infrastructure and ability to accommodate visitors from around the world.
Munich Mayor Dominik Krause also welcomed UEFA’s decision, particularly given how recently the city hosted the Champions League final.
“The fact that UEFA is placing its trust in Munich again, just three years after hosting the 2025 final, is a special honor for our city. Munich stands for great sporting moments, excellent infrastructure, and enthusiastic fans. We look forward to welcoming guests from all over the world again in 2028 and celebrating a football festival together,” Krause stated.
For Bayern Munich supporters, there is an obvious additional layer of intrigue. The Allianz Arena will host the Champions League final, but the club will want to make sure it is not merely the host venue.
The ultimate dream would be to see Bayern Munich earn the right to play in its own stadium on European football’s biggest night.
After all, there is no better home advantage than that.
