Neil Magny’s submission victory over Jake Matthews at UFC Perth last month in Western Australia was “strange” enough to warrant an appeal with Western Australia Combat Commission. Team Matthews argues
the bout was already over after being stopped by referee Jim Perdios in the opening frame.
Perdios subsequently restarted the match after ruling the first-round buzzer — not the “Celtic Kid’s” guillotine submission — was responsible for halting the action.
Magny shared the update on his official Instagram page:
This wasn’t the first buzzer-beating guillotine choke under scrutiny.
The victory was Magny’s second straight and moved him into a tie with Charles Oliveira (24) on the promotion’s all-time wins list (Jim Miller is first with 27). The 38 year-old “Haitian Sensation” stands at 31-13 with 14 finishes but has yet to work his way back into the welterweight Top 15.
As for Matthews, 31, the Magny loss snapped a three-fight win streak and dropped the Aussie to 22-8.
