The Seattle Seahawks will be seeing someone else on the opposing sideline in their next division matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.
The Cardinals have fired head coach Jonathan Gannon after three seasons
with the team, as reported by NFL insider Adam Schefter. Gannon went 15-36 between 2023 and 2025, including a 3-15 mark vs. the NFC West and an 0-6 record against Seattle. Arizona will be hiring its fifth head coach since 2017, a stark contrast from the rest of the division.
The 42-year-old coach was initially hired by the team in early 2023, coming off two seasons as the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive coordinator from 2021 to 2022. Under Gannon, Philadelphia ranked 1st in passing yards allowed in 2022, with opposing offenses averaging just 179.8 yards per game.
After winning their first two games to start the season 2-0, the Cardinals went into freefall, losing 14 of their last 15 games to finish 3-14. Arizona placed a lot of emphasis on its defense during this year’s draft and free agency, with all but one of its seven drafted rookies being defensive players.
Predictably, the team’s offense performed poorly, being hampered by injuries for much of the year and finishing 23rd in points scored (20.9/game). Quarterback Kyler Murray, wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., and running back James Conner all finished the season on injured reserve, just to name a few.
Murray suffered a foot injury vs. the Tennessee Titans in Week 5, prompting the Cardinals to switch to Jacoby Brissett under center beginning in Week 6. Brissett performed well in his 12 starts, going 315-for-484 passing for 3,366 yards and 23 touchdowns against just eight interceptions. Nevertheless, Arizona went 1-11 with the veteran QB as its starter, defeating the Dallas Cowboys in Week 9.
As reported by ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss, “Heading into Sunday’s game against the Rams, Arizona had 42 different players miss a combined 309 games with injury and had 25 players on injured reserve — the most in the NFL.” Not exactly a recipe for success when you have that many players miss significant portions of the season with injuries.
Despite all of their investment on defense, the Cardinals’ D ended 2025 ranked 29th in points allowed (28.7 per game). Defensive coordinator Nick Rallis’s unit let up 40 points in a game on four separate occasions, with each of Arizona’s NFC West opponents doing so once, including the Seahawks in Week 10.
The Cardinals will finish 2025 with a 3-14 record, good for last place in the NFC and the No. 3 pick in the 2026 draft.
