Bayern Munich opened up the DFB-Pokal campaign with a dramatic win against a third division opponent, SV Wehen Wiesbaden. After 60 minutes, Bayern was comfortably up 2-0 with 80% possession and shifted their focus to the ride home and the next opponent. Wehen capitalized on two mental mistakes by Bayern’s backline and Fatih Kaya scored two quick goals to even the scoreline.
Bayern stuck to the plan and overcame some adversity to advance to the second round. Harry Kane uncharacteristically missed a penalty
kick but responded in the biggest way. Four minutes into stoppage time, Josip Stanišić’s looping cross found a flying Kane on the back post for a dramatic game winner.
“It was a crazy game, as the cup sometimes brings,” said Kane (via @iMiaSanMia). “We were in total control; in the first half, we should have been two or three goals up. We had some great chances in the second half to decide the game. They kept going and knew they could turn the momentum around with a goal. We then had to show character to stay calm in the final 15 minutes. Luckily, we got the goal in the end. We know we still have a lot to improve on. We did our job, which was the most important thing, and now we’re looking ahead.”
Kane spent a decade at Tottenham falling short of trophies. In his time at Bayern, he has never been rattled by the opponent, environment, or the moment. His clutch goal elevated Bayern today and will continue to raise the club’s expectations moving forward.
Bayern Munich traveled to Frankfurt to take on SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the DFB-Pokal.
The home side was game and did give Bayern Munich a battle. Sure, the Bavarians were deeper, quicker, stronger, and better, but the 3.Liga side was not going to go down easy in what was an entertaining match. Bayern Munich ultimately won 3-2.
