The Sixers did their best March Madness impression with a too-close-for-comfort win in Utah, defeating the Jazz 126-116.
Do not let the final score fool you, as there
were 19 lead changes in this one, and a tie game with just under six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Give credit to Adem Bona, Trendon Watford (offensively) and Cam Payne where its due, but our Bell Ringer nominees stood above the rest.
Quentin Grimes: 25 points, 9-of-15 FG, 1-of-4 3PT, 6-of-6 FT, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 turnovers
Grimes set the tone with his relentless driving to the paint in the first half. All of his points came from the inside the arc or at the free throw line and was not letting the Sixers’ poor shooting to stop him from getting his own.
He drilled his first three in the third to help close the gap on the Jazz and showed off a sweet double clutch layup in transition.
He hit a huge shot in the fourth to give the Sixers a 110-108 lead with a midrange pull-up. He tacked on another midrange jumper off the glass after dribbling through the heart of the defense when the Sixers perhaps needed a bucket the most. Grimes consistent aggressiveness translated over to our next Bell Ringer nominee.
VJ Edgecombe: 22 points, 9-of-19 FG, 1-of-4 3PT, 3-4 FT, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 block
Edgecombe did not really start hooping until the second quarter, but had a slick play in the first to save the ball from going out of bounds on the baseline and it lead to a Grimes transition layup. He was attacking the paint and found his touch in the midrange with a pull-up going left. He absolutely fooled Kyle Filipowski on a play in the second that you have to see:
He would add another drive blowing past an attempted double team for an easy two at the rim despite briefly losing a shoe.
He hit a big three at the end of the third to give the Sixers a momentary lead and the rookie his sixth double-double of the season.
In the fourth he converted a strong finish at the rim to stop Jazz momentum. He had a beautiful midrange fade going right for the dagger with under a minute left to give the Sixers a double-digit lead.
He would also notch a career-high 13 rebounds, which led the team.
